The Source Plant
For hundreds of years, Litsea, a plant native to East Asia, has been used by the indigenous people of Taiwan in traditional health practices. It is also known by the name “mountain pepper” in Mandarin, the plant’s small berries resemble peppercorns and are harvested from July through September. Like Manuka oil, Litsea oil’s source plant is a tree; it bears pale lemon-scented flowers and small fruits that look like little peppers, hence the nickname. While the fruit is steamed distilled for Litsea essential oil, the timber is sometimes used for furniture or construction. Sweet and soothing, bright and lemony-fresh, inhale straight from the bottle for a quick pick-me-up.
